Few neighbourhoods can check off as many boxes as Clayton. It’s certainly part of why it’s one of the fastest-growing communities in the Fraser Valley. Drawing many families to the area because of how much is available to see and do, there’s so much more that you can fit into just a single day. While there is likely always a new and exciting option, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to plan a full day’s itinerary for you and your loved ones. Whether you’re gearing up for a day with your young children, a day-long date with your favourite person or an outing with your friends, the following options include something for everyone!
Start your day with a quick stop at Black Tiger Coffee (photo above) for your caffeinated beverage of choice hot or cold. Get a later start than you anticipated for your day of adventures, or perhaps just a little peckish? No problem – grab a donut so you don’t go hungry. The Simpsons fans will surely grab their “Homer Donut”, which features a fluffy donut that’s dunked in pink vanilla icing and topped with sprinkles. Seeking something a little less sweet? Their breakfast bagel comes with ham, cheese and an egg patty.
Now that you’ve got a caffeine-fueled pep in your step, go check out the beautifully-designed Clayton Public Library, located on the top floor of the Clayton Community Centre. Spread out over a spacious 14,000 square feet, it includes quiet study areas and numerous reading spaces, as well as computer access and free Wi-Fi. You can also take advantage of their printing and photocopying services. Be sure to check their website before your visit as their hours of operation vary daily.
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with any of the authentic Mexican options that are available at the fully licensed Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen. They showcase a number of classic and unique Mexican food dishes that use fresh, local ingredients, but none are better than the delicious, gluten-free corn tortillas that are made from scratch. With an array of vegetarian and vegan options, they can satisfy almost any dietary need and are happy to suit your requirements. For taco lovers, you can’t go wrong with their “Mix & Match” combo that includes three tacos with your choice of toppings. If you skipped grabbing a donut from Black Tiger earlier, you’ll want to leave room for a churro or four!
What kind of full day would it be without a little shopping? After lunch, you’ll want to head to Willowbrook Shopping Centre and pop into Nordstrom Rack. Whether you’re shopping for a great sale or the latest designer trends, anyone can spend hours in this store. The shoe racks alone could serve as a full afternoon activity if you choose to work your way through them all. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, as Nordstrom Rack also offers great prices on clothing, eyewear and accessories for women, men and children. If that doesn’t satisfy your urge to shop, you can also walk over to the Voyageur Soap and Candle store and get started with the ingredients and professional advice you need to start making your own candles and soaps. They also offer educational classes and tips on a number of techniques.
What does every fun, fulfilling afternoon need? Obviously the answer is ice cream! Thankfully, Duke’s Fine Ice Cream has you covered. Featuring scoops of ice cream, sherbets and vegan sorbets, they use natural ingredients and focus on a number of local partnerships to bring their customers the classic flavours plus a rotating cast of seasonal specialties. Not sure if you can find the room for ice cream right now? Duke’s also offers a wide selection of take-home pints of their ice creams. Can’t make a mess in the car while you’re driving? Try one of your favourite ice cream flavours as a milkshake! Duke’s covers every angle and keeps their customers informed of new menu additions on their Instagram page.
One of the most alluring aspects of Clayton’s neighbourhood feel is the number of parks, walking trails and outdoor play spaces that are available. Clayton Park features an off-leash dog park, tennis courts and scenic walking points. Have little ones that need to burn off some steam? Located adjacent to Hazelgrove Elementary School, Hazelgrove Park has tennis and basketball courts, large field areas and an outdoor playground for the kids.
After a long day full of adventures around the neighbourhood, settle into Haven Kitchen and Bar for dinner. You can make reservations online in advance, so be sure to save yourselves a seat at one of the most sought-after local restaurants. Between the cocktail menu (3oz Zombie, anyone?!) and limited parking, one of its biggest perks is that it’s walking distance from your Clayton home. Try the fried chicken sandwich, made with local chicken breast, sweet pickles and a smoked chilli barbeque rub and add a corkscrew fried pickle on the side. There are also a number of vegetarian options, but the kitchen is happy to assist customers with any dietary needs to the best of their ability. Check out their Instagram page for daily specials.
After dinner (and now that you’re already walking home anyways), stop by Camp Beer Company. As a locally-owned business, they pride themselves on giving people in the area an alternative to standard beers. They focus on high quality control and consistency, while producing “craft beers that for the most part are lower in alcohol and higher in flavour”. Whether you’re stopping in for a nightcap on their oversized outdoor patio or are ready to head home, Camp Beer Co. has you covered. Purchase a growler and take home your favourite beer straight from their taps so you can enjoy it when it’s convenient.
Clayton’s growing neighbourhood offers a wide variety of shopping, dining and outdoor entertainment options for everyone to enjoy. This family-friendly area is the perfect place to raise a young family, or to simply stop by for a full day of enjoying all the things that Clayton provides.
